More than 1,400 Fairtrade towns exist worldwide. As the name already suggests, Fairtrade towns support fair trade in their community. In order to be given the title Fairtrade town, 1 shop (including florists) per every 7000th person as well as restaurants need to offer at least two fair trade products. Moreover, the topic "fair trade" needs to be prominent throughout the city's media - whether that be through newspaper articles or some other aspect of public affairs. The most important aspect is that fair trade products will be used in public facilities, such as schools and organizations.
Since September 2011, Leipzig has been added to the list of Fairtrade towns. Being the only town of this kind in Germany, Leipzig has taken over the great responsibilty of being a role model for (perhaps) future fairtrade towns in Saxony.
Interestingly, the relatively small town of Chemnitz is on its way to becoming a Fairtrade town as well.
Fairtrade products can be bought in larger supermarkets. For a better range of fair trade products, you can also go to fair trade shops (Weltladen).
